Brett at the Emergency Operations Center

Gotta catch up now

24 Feb 2003

On the night of the 15th, I took Elena to a USABDA dance, and then I went to a friendly little "after Valentine's" get-together at Catherine's house. At 2 a.m., I came home and was websurfing while watching TV. Then all of a sudden . . .

Everything went dark on my block. Every now and again, the sky would light up a very pretty turquoise color and then go black again. I found out the next day that the turquoise moments were from exploding transformers.

With the power out and the heat off, I tried to cuddle up under a bunch of blankets and go back to sleep, but there's an insanely tall pine tree in my backyard that I thought might fall on my house. So I couldn't get back to sleep; I was scared that I was going to be crushed by a tree while I slept.

After a very long night of worry and half-naps, I got a phone call from my boss at the city government. She wanted me to come downtown and help out at the Emergency Operations Center, setting up the Lexcall database on some of the laptop computers there. So I went into work on a Sunday.

The next six days were all duplicates of the first workday, with me doing emergency government data management during the day (running reports and troubleshooting electronics) and sponging accommodations off my friends at night. Work was pretty cool because I got to sit in on press conferences with the mayor and chief of police.

The photo above was taken at the Emergency Operations Center on the third floor of the Police building in downtown Lexington.

Summary: couldn't update my site while my power was out for a week
